864 "Rubix"
Participant 864, also known as "Rubix," is an itinerant accordionist who has worked as a farmer in the Berrywood Commune and a builder and healer in Dead Horse. They are an accomplished engineer, having reconfigured Dead Horse's community farm for efficiency and improved the design of its walls. About
The nickname "Rubix" is derived from his skin, the face of which resembles a Rubik's cube. In Session 8 a glitch revealed that this is actually a mask, and that 864 does in fact have a human face underneath it. He is known for being loud, playing the accordion (though this was only revealed in later sessions), and having a laugh that even the Jester was scared of. He intensely dislikes griefers and terrorists, and will harangue them mercilessly even if the only weapon he has is a wooden hoe. He swears creatively, sometimes not in English.
History
864 initially took part in the group that became Capital Hill, having spawned on the island that made up the nation during Session 1. He was one of the first to start collecting kelp as a food source during the initial overcrowding of the island, and is anecdotally the first person to call the island "Taiwan" (though this name was only used briefly and unofficially in the first few sessions). At a certain point, having grown rapidly tired of trying to supply Capital Hill with food while himself starving, he migrated to the Berrywood Commune where he quickly started gaining levels as a farmer. An attempt to switch his profession to guardsman ended after he was repeatedly killed by mobs (and had his levels reset) while trying to farm XP. During this time in Session 1 he also first encountered Player 462 "the Jester," who he immediately disliked and would kill or chase while laughing maniacally. This was common practice at the time, as the Jester was seen as a petty nuisance who was only trying to cause trouble.
During Session 2 he weathered the mob swarm with the rest of Berrywood, though he died repeatedly and had to find increasingly creative ways to return to the settlement. While 274 was calling for war on Skyland in order to take over their nearby base and avoid the mobs, Rubix, 291 and 521 climbed the Skylanders' platform and discovered it to be abandoned. When this information was relayed to the rest of the nation, the citizens rapidly packed their things and migrated into the sky. Midway through Session 3, Berrywood became largely abandoned. Rubix was one of the last four Berrywooders to abandon the platform base, leaving for Dead Horse and becoming a farmer. He noticed that the farm at the time was highly inefficient and scattered, devoting much of the next few sessions to streamlining the growing system and terracing part of the opposite riverbank in order to provide the settlement with as much food as possible.
Rubix finished most of his plans for the farm, and finding that he had already leveled up as a builder he decided to help work on Dead Horse's city walls. His presence was inconsistent in these middle sessions, but he was present at the first lava attack on Dead Horse, having seen the lava dropping from the sky as he worked on the walls and rushing to save what he could of the city. He also build the first watch-tower in Dead Horse - which still stands to this day at the southeastern corner of the old city walls - and improved on the embrasure system the builder's guild was using atop the walls. In addition, he repeatedly aided his fellow Dead Horsers in chasing off terrorists.
Having missed a few sessions, he reappeared in to a Dead Horse ravaged by multiple lava casts and with little to no central command. It was at this point that he revealed his talent for the accordion, which he played several times to accompany Player 521. He has also written several songs about recent events and Dead Horse itself, of which only one has ever been performed:
The cry can be heard by both enemy and friend
that Dead Horse has risen from the ashes again!
No matter the strife and no matter the pain,
our people shall ever be the masters of the plains!
We forged a new world with nothing but our hands
and we'll never submit to any terroristic plan!
Our swords were unsheathed as we shouted loud, "Hurray!"
and, charging into battle, drove the griefers away!
— to the melody of "The Hero Chapaev crossed the Urals"; only the first two verses were ever performed live.
At the beginning of Session 12, he died to a zombie almost instantly and respawned in Hell, where he briefly became a farmer again. After a few days, however, he returned to Dead Horse, finding the community smaller but more active and organized. He quickly re-specialized to become the community's healer.
