Capital Hill
Capital HillCapital Hill was an island nation, located next to the mainland civilizations of Berrywood and Berrytown. It was extremely close to the spawn area and was subjected to repeated griefing and arson attacks. Their current whereabouts are officially unknown, though it is likely to have disintegrated by the end of Session 3. |

History
Early in Session 1 many people crowded around furnaces and campfires on a large island within the spawn radius to get dried kelp, a convenient source of food when no other was readily available. In this early stage, the civilization was alternately known as "California" or "Taiwan." During this session, after overcoming initial survival hurdles, an election took place on the island. Three candidates made speeches, and in the following vote Player 682 was appointed President in a landslide. Their first act was to declare "California" a capitalist society and to establish the official name of the settlement as "Capital Hill."
In Session 2, it was announced that – due to an onslaught of mobs faced by every ground-dwelling civilization during the session – the Capitalists would be migrating away from their original settlement. Their current whereabouts are unknown; it was initially thought to be common knowledge that they had moved underground, but little has been heard of them since then. With the discovery that hostile mobs could tunnel extensively to reach and kill players, rumors abounded (mainly within the Berrywood Commune) that the Capitalists were killed off repeatedly to the point that the society dissolved. Some former members are known to have established Loup Land, initially as a colony and later as an independent nation; others dispersed.
Economy
Capital Hill was an extremely pro-capitalist society and pro-private land ownership. People were paid 5 "682 emeralds" if they owned land and built themselves a house. "682 emeralds" were the only true legal tender for people to use in commerce, though bartering was not disallowed. Using an anvil to make counterfeit emeralds through renaming was deemed acceptable due to the effort required.
It was ruled that nothing should be given for free and Player 682 destroyed most of the community chests around the island to enforce this. Many of the island's inhabitants were against any sort of handouts.
Government
The President 682 ultimately had the power to propose ideas to the masses and have them vote on it, such as the issue of location and his desire to move. His Vice President assisted him in those duties and handled foreign affairs more closely than the President himself. The citizens had the right to own private property, and indeed were rewarded for doing so.
Foreign affairs
Capital Hill was quite friendly with the nearby nation of Berrytown, though diplomats from Berrywood also had talks and shared information with Capital Hill despite their general animosity towards each other.
Military
The nation relied on a national militia, with each individual citizen willing and ready to take up arms when threats, such as Drowned incursions, arose.
Culture
Any sort of asking for a handout or giving a handout was frowned upon. People legally owned their houses, so entering without prior permission was seen as rude and could even be considered criminal. There were many patriotic individuals who enjoyed the capitalistic society of Capital Hill.
However, many people outside and even within the civilization harbored negative or ambivalent feelings towards the nation and its capitalist ideals of its leaders.
Some referred to it as "Compton Hill" to equate it to a notorious city in the United States. Others flaunted the rules by setting up community chests of tools, offering food (berries or fish) to eachother, and building houses off the side of the island.
